Ethiopia joins Africa’s early health financing reform initiative to strengthen long-term investment strategies

The country will receive strategic policy and fiscal support as part of a continent-wide effort to strengthen sustainable healthcare funding through domestic reforms and innovative financing

Ethiopia has been chosen as one of the first African countries to participate in a new continental programme aimed at transforming the way healthcare systems are financed, reinforcing national efforts to build more resilient and sustainable funding models, as a TV BRICS partner

Ethiopian authorities said participation in the programme complements ongoing reforms designed to expand public financing capacity while ensuring fiscal responsibility. Officials stressed that investment in healthcare should be regarded as a driver of economic growth, workforce productivity and long-term human capital development.

As part of the programme, Ethiopia will receive extensive technical and analytical assistance, including an in-depth assessment of the macroeconomic and fiscal conditions influencing national healthcare financing. The analysis is expected to provide evidence-based recommendations for future policy decisions and identify practical strategies to improve the sustainability and efficiency of health sector investment.

The government also confirmed its intention to strengthen cooperation between finance and health institutions alongside regional partners to accelerate implementation and exchange best practices with other African nations pursuing similar reforms.

A joint technical team will oversee the programme’s implementation, coordinate policy analysis and support dialogue on financing reforms. Officials believe the experience gained through the initiative could contribute to broader efforts aimed at improving healthcare financing systems across the African continent.
