Stephen Eustaquio struck deep into stoppage time to fire Canada into the FIFA World Cup last 16 for the first time in the nation’s history with a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa in Los Angeles on Sunday

Just as extra time appeared inevitable, Eustaquio collected the ball on the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a thunderous low drive that beat the outstretched Ronwen Williams

South Africa, who had looked increasingly content to take the tie into extra time and possibly penalties, mounted a frantic late response but could not find an equaliser before the final whistle

Canada will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston on July 4 for a place in the quarter-finals

With both teams making their first appearance in the World Cup knockout rounds, chances were few and far between in a tense opening half

Canada came closest to breaking the deadlock just before the interval when a corner triggered a goalmouth scramble. Moise Bombito’s header was brilliantly cleared off the line by Aubrey Modiba before Tajon Buchanan’s follow-up effort was blocked by Williams’ chest from point-blank range

Moments later, Richie Laryea went down inside the penalty area under a challenge, prompting loud appeals from the Canadians. However, after a VAR review, the referee waved play on, a decision that drew furious boos from the sea of red-clad Canadian supporters. Head coach Jesse Marsch continued his protests as the teams headed into the dressing rooms for half-time

Canada maintained the pressure after the restart but struggled to break down South Africa’s disciplined defence

Their next clear opportunity arrived shortly before the second-half cooling break when Tani Oluwaseyi forced another save from Williams. Jonathan David looked certain to score from the rebound, only for Mbekezeli Mbokazi to produce a superb goal-line clearance and keep the scores level

As the match drifted towards extra time, Eustaquio produced the moment of magic Canada had been searching for. His fierce strike from outside the area flew beyond Williams to seal a famous victory and send the North Americans into uncharted territory

Speaking after the match, the Canadian captain dedicated the historic triumph to the nation

“This victory is for all Canadians,” Eustaquio said
