Fabricated AI Wildlife Videos Threaten Global Conservation Funding

A University of Cordoba study warns that viral AI-generated wildlife videos are spreading biological falsehoods and skewing conservation funding toward mammals.

Hyper-realistic AI-generated videos depicting impossible animal behaviors are flooding social media platforms, fundamentally distorting public understanding of natural ecosystems and threatening critical funding for endangered species conservation.

A new study published in the journal Conservation Biology by researchers at the University of Cordoba has exposed the severe ecological consequences of generative artificial intelligence. As digital tools become increasingly sophisticated at rendering photorealistic wildlife, viral algorithms are prioritizing emotionally resonant but biologically impossible content over scientific reality.

    The Fabrication of Nature

The research team—José Guerrero-Casado, Tamara Murillo-Jiménez, Antonio Carpio, Francisco Tortosa, and Rocío Serrano-Rodríguez—documented how fabricated interactions are reshaping public perception.

The authors highlighted a viral AI video that purported to show various bird species shielding their chicks from heavy rain, captioned as an ultimate display of “mother love.” The framing is biologically illiterate: in 90% of bird species, males actively participate in raising the young, while vast swaths of reptiles and amphibians provide absolutely no parental care. Yet, these anthropomorphized, fictionalized depictions routinely garner millions of views, establishing a false baseline for how wild animals interact with their environment.

    The Danger of Fictional Bonds

Beyond misrepresenting animal parenthood, the study points to a deeply concerning trend of videos depicting fictional bonds between predators and prey, or humans and highly dangerous wildlife.

    • Dangerous Precedents: The researchers cited a fabricated clip showing fishers rescuing a polar bear, which reacts with exaggerated, human-like gratitude. Such content instills a false sense of security regarding apex predators.
    • Fueling the Exotic Trade: By portraying wild animals as affectionate and emotionally complex in a human sense, AI videos risk driving demand for the illegal exotic pet trade.
    • The Mammalian Bias: AI models are predominantly trained on, and users predominantly generate, content featuring charismatic mammals (lions, bears, elephants). This exacerbates existing biases in conservation funding, leaving vital but less “photogenic” ecosystems—such as amphibian habitats or insect populations—severely underfunded.

    Impact on African Ecotourism

For nations reliant on wildlife tourism, the proliferation of AI-generated content poses an immediate economic and operational threat. In Kenya, the operations of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the broader Maasai Mara ecosystem rely on tourists possessing a realistic understanding of wildlife behavior.

When international visitors arrive in Nairobi expecting the Disney-fied, hyper-affectionate animal interactions they viewed on TikTok, they routinely engage in dangerous behaviors—attempting to approach wild predators or disregarding safari guide instructions. Furthermore, the spread of fake videos depicting impossible wildlife densities or fictional inter-species cooperation creates unmeetable expectations, threatening the authenticity and

Generative AI is not merely creating fake art; it is actively rewriting the public’s understanding of biology, with potentially catastrophic results for the species that actually exist.
