Infantino met with a Nigerian delegation led by National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko at FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich on Tuesday, just days after the resignation of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and members of the federation’s executive committee.

The meeting focused on the institutional, governance and developmental challenges facing Nigerian football, as well as areas where FIFA could provide additional support.
In a post on Instagram, Infantino said the discussions were aimed at aligning FIFA and Nigeria on a shared vision for the future of football in the country.
“We had a detailed talk on institutional, governance and developmental topics, as well as our ongoing collaborations.
While stressing the need to create stronger structures and pathways to provide even more opportunities for the youth, we explored areas where FIFA can further support the growth of our beautiful game in this football-passionate country.”
The timing of Infantino’s involvement is especially noteworthy, considering that the West African country is attempting to rebuild its football administration following a period of growing unhappiness with the performance of its national teams.
Gusau announced his resignation on August 27, stating that it was meant to pave the way for a thorough reform process aimed at tackling Nigerian football’s “institutional, governance, and developmental challenges”.
The resignation occurred after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the Super Falcons also missed the 2027 Women’s World Cup for the first time since the tournament’s inception in 1991.
The NFF has subsequently shifted to an interim administrative setup, with Emmanuel Ikpeme named acting general secretary, while the federation’s planned elected congress has been suspended.
Infantino’s meeting with Nigerian authorities indicates that FIFA intends to remain closely involved while the country strives to rebuild its football systems.
Following the meeting, FIFA accepted the resignations of the old NFF leadership and agreed to continue negotiations with the Nigerian government, the NFF administration, and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on a comprehensive reform strategy.

Infantino’s proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise has met strong criticism from European football authorities, notably UEFA, due to worries about the commercialization of FIFA’s assets and the organization’s governance.
