Kenya’s Junior Starlets moved a step closer to securing a place at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup after defeating South Africa 2-0 in the first leg of their final qualification tie on Saturday, July 4, at Lucas Moripe Stadium. The victory gives the Mildred Cheche-coached side a valuable cushion ahead of the decisive return leg in Nairobi, where qualification to a second consecutive FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup will be on the line

The Junior Starlets made their intentions clear from the opening whistle, attacking with confidence. Their bright start paid off in the 14th minute when Faith Boke found the back of the net to hand Kenya an early lead

South Africa had a golden opportunity to level matters just three minutes later after being awarded a penalty. However, goalkeeper Mishel Okoyo produced a crucial save to deny the hosts and preserve Kenya’s advantage. The save proved to be a pivotal moment as the Junior Starlets went into the halftime break leading 1-0

Kenya returned for the second half with the same intensity and determination. Their persistence was rewarded in the 61st minute when Brenda Achieng doubled the visitors’ lead, giving the Junior Starlets greater control of the contest

The disciplined defensive display ensured South Africa had no way back into the match, as Kenya secured an important 2-0 away victory

With the first leg complete, the Junior Starlets now return home carrying a strong advantage into the decisive second leg, scheduled for Saturday, July 12, at Nyayo National Stadium. Kick-off is set for 3:00 p.m, with the winner on aggregate earning a place at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup

The Junior Starlets will now look to complete the job on home soil, backed by their supporters, as they aim to book another historic appearance on the world stage
