The FIFA World Cup 2026 is set to enter its most thrilling phase as the Round of 32 begins, with every match now carrying the ultimate consequence which is elimination. After an entertaining group stage that saw 48 teams battle for survival, the field has been reduced to 32 nations, all chasing the dream of lifting football’s most prestigious trophy

With no room for error, the knockout stage promises six days of high-quality football featuring former world champions, emerging contenders and surprise packages that have earned their place in the last 32. Every fixture now represents a step closer to glory or the end of a nation’s World Cup journey

The action began on Sunday, June 28, when South Africa faced Canada in Los Angeles. However, a last minute goal in extra time in favour of the host, Canada paved their way to the next round of the tournament.

Monday brings two heavyweight encounters. Five-time champions Brazil begin their knockout campaign against Japan in Houston before Germany take on Paraguay in Foxborough. Brazil will be looking to continue their pursuit of a sixth World Cup title, while Germany hope to build on a solid group-stage campaign against a Paraguay side eager to spring a surprise

Tuesday’s schedule features three intriguing contests. The Netherlands will meet Morocco in Guadalupe, Mexico, followed by Ivory Coast against Norway in Arlington. Later in the evening, France will face Sweden in New Jersey in one of the standout European clashes of the Round of 32, with both teams targeting another deep run in the tournament

England’s journey resumes on Wednesday when they take on DR Congo in Atlanta. The Three Lions enter the knockout stage with expectations of challenging for the title, but history has shown that every World Cup knockout match presents a unique challenge. Later that day, Belgium meet Senegal in Seattle in another contest expected to be fiercely competitive

Thursday’s action begins with host United States taking on Bosnia and Herzegovina in Santa Clara before Spain faces Austria in Los Angeles. With home support behind them, the United States will hope to extend their campaign, while Spain will look to showcase the quality that has made them one of the tournament favourites

The Round of 32 concludes on Friday with five matches spread across North America. Portugal faces Croatia in Toronto before Switzerland takes on Algeria in Vancouver. Australia then meet Egypt in Arlington, with both nations looking to continue impressive World Cup campaigns

The spotlight will then turn to Miami, where defending champions Argentina face Cape Verde. The fixture pits one of football’s traditional powerhouses against one of the tournament’s most inspiring stories, with Cape Verde becoming one of the standout nations to reach the knockout rounds. Argentina will be determined to continue their title defence, while Cape Verde have already shown they are capable of competing on football’s biggest stage

The final match of the Round of 32 sees Colombia face Ghana in Kansas City, bringing an end to a packed week of knockout football before the remaining teams progress to the last 16

The expanded 48-team format has already produced greater diversity in the knockout rounds, with teams from across the globe earning the opportunity to compete beyond the group stage. Now, however, past performances and group-stage results count for little. Every match is a winner-takes-all contest where a single goal, a penalty shootout or an inspired individual performance can decide a nation’s fate

As the FIFA World Cup 2026 enters the knockout stage, the margin for error disappears. Sixteen fixtures, thirty-two teams and one objective remain which is to keep winning or head home
