Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has revealed that he has no plans to pursue a career in coaching following his retirement from <a href="https://absafricatv.com/farizon-opens-global-spare-part-distribution-center-to-strengthen-international-aftersales-support/” title=”Farizon Opens Global Spare Part Distribution Center to Strengthen International Aftersales Support”>international football, saying his long-term ambition is to contribute to the game through football administration.
The former Nigeria skipper, who retired from international football in December 2025, said he believes he can make a greater impact by helping shape the future of Nigerian football from within its governing structures rather than from the touchline.
Speaking in an interview with Brila FM, the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Player of the Tournament said he has often been asked whether he would consider coaching the Super Eagles, but admitted it is not a path he intends to follow.
“I have had so many people ask me about coaching the team. I’m not sure that is something that I really want to do.
I think there also need to be players that think about going one level above that whether it is going to be in the boardroom, whether it is going to be working with federations – with FIFA, with CAF, whether the NFF.
I think that’s probably where you can make the biggest change.”
Troost-Ekong disclosed that he has already begun studying football governance and administrative structures in preparation for a possible future role within the sport.
According to the former captain, his objective is to contribute to the development of Nigerian football by working with organisations such as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the Confederation of African Football (CAF) or FIFA.
A distinguished Super Eagles career
Troost-Ekong brought the curtain down on his international career in December 2025 after serving Nigeria for a decade.
The central defender earned 83 caps for the Super Eagles and captained the national team during one of the most successful periods of his career. He represented Nigeria at five major international tournaments and helped the country win a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games, an Africa Cup of Nations bronze medal in 2019 and an AFCON silver medal in 2023, when he captained the Super Eagles and was named the tournament’s Best Player.
Having concluded his playing career with the national team, Troost-Ekong is now setting his sights on contributing to football from an administrative perspective, with the aim of helping shape the future of the game in Nigeria.
