The Gauteng Transport Department denied claims of a breakdown in its relationship with the province’s taxi industry, despite threats of a province-wide shutdown.
South African National Taxi Council(SANTACO) said it was locked in an escalating dispute with the provincial government over delays in issuing operating licences.
The organisation warned the backlog was hurting operators financially and could ultimately affect the millions of commuters who rely on taxis every day.
SANTACO is threatening a province-wide shutdown if its concerns are not addressed, accusing the department of prolonged delays and a lack of meaningful engagement.
But Gauteng Transport Department spokesperson Lesiba Mpya said while there were challenges, relations with the taxi industry had not broken down.
“The taxi industry has informed the MEC that, look, there is a problem in terms of the issuing of operating licences. Please intervene. And the MEC has done just that by actually reviewing how the operating licence is distributed or issued. And she has taken it upon herself to actually go to the front line, take ownership of the operating licences, go to specific associations, and issue out these operating licences.”
