Former Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has sounded the alarm over rising political rhetoric ahead of the 2027 General Election, urging leaders to reject divisive politics and safeguard Kenya’s unity.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Gideon warned against what he described as increasing use of “borderline inflammatory language, ethnic profiling, and reckless utterances” by some politicians, saying such rhetoric risks deepening divisions and undermining peaceful coexistence.

His remarks come as political activity gathers pace across the country, with leaders intensifying rallies and early campaigns ahead of the 2027 polls.

“The continued use of borderline inflammatory language, ethnic profiling, and reckless utterances by political leaders seeking to divide Kenyans along political, regional, or communal lines is regrettable,” Gideon said.

He cautioned that if left unchecked, such statements could erode national cohesion at a time when the country needs unity most.

“Such utterances undermine our national cohesion and threaten peaceful coexistence, especially as we head to the 2027 general elections,” he said.

The former KANU chairman urged politicians to exercise restraint in their public remarks, saying leadership carries a responsibility to promote peace rather than deepen political and ethnic divisions.

According to Gideon, political competition should focus on ideas and policies instead of encouraging hostility among communities or turning Kenyans against one another because of differing political views.

“Political competition should never turn fellow citizens into enemies, nor should differences in opinion become the basis for communities to distrust one another or for our nation to descend into division,” he said.

He called on leaders to uphold dignity in public discourse and avoid statements that could inflame tensions as the country moves closer to the next general election.

Gideon also appealed to Kenyans to remain united despite political differences, saying the country’s diversity should continue to be a

“We must continue upholding unity as our shield and greatest defence in moments of challenge and collectively recommit ourselves to a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Kenya,” he said.

His statement adds to growing calls from political and civic leaders urging restraint in public discourse as the country prepares for another competitive election cycle.
