Gillian van Houten became a familiar face in millions of South African homes long before she found her true calling in the African bush.

Her death at the age of 72 has stirred memories of a trusted television presenter, but conservationists are mourning someone whose greatest contribution came after the cameras stopped rolling.

Her journey shows that a second chapter can leave the deepest mark, especially when it is devoted to protecting nature and inspiring others to care for it.

WHY DID GILLIAN VAN HOUTEN LEAVE TELEVISION?

For many viewers during the 1980s and 1990s, Van Houten represented calm and credibility on SABC television news. She became one of South Africa’s best-known news anchors during a period of profound political change, earning public trust through her measured delivery.

Her career then took an unexpected turn.

Wildlife filmmaker and conservationist John Varty invited her to join a leopard research project at Londolozi. She accepted, leaving behind broadcasting to help tell the stories of Africa’s wildlife from the field rather than the studio.

That decision shaped the rest of her life.

HOW DID GILLIAN VAN HOUTEN HELP CONSERVATION?

Conservation depends on more than scientists and rangers. It also needs storytellers who can help people value wildlife. Van Houten became one of those voices.

She worked alongside Varty on leopard conservation and contributed to documentaries and books that introduced audiences to the behaviour and importance of big cats.

Her book The Way of the Leopard reflected that commitment.

Her work arrived during an important period for conservation. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, leopards remain listed as Vulnerable across their global range because of habitat loss, illegal hunting and conflict with people.

Stories that encourage respect for wildlife play an important role in long-term conservation support.

    WHY ARE CONSERVATIONISTS PAYING TRIBUTE?

The emotional tributes following her death reveal why Gillian van Houten mattered beyond television.

In his farewell message, John Varty reflected on the decades they shared, their three children, Savanna, Sha and Tao, and the life they built around Africa’s wild places.

He described her passing with both sadness and gratitude after a long illness.

Others remembered her warmth as much as her work.

Conservation advocate Jill Watson praised her ability to help people connect with wildlife through care rather than spectacle.

Musician Don Clarke recalled her intelligence and kindness after meeting her only once. Those reflections explain why her passing has touched so many people.

South Africa has lost a respected broadcaster, but the conservation fraternity has lost something more personal.

It has lost a woman who chose to exchange the certainty of the newsroom for the uncertainty of the bush, believing that Africa’s wildlife deserved its own powerful voice.

That legacy will continue wherever people learn to value the wild because someone first told its story well.
