Has Ghana’s NPP learned why it lost?

From majority to minority: Has Ghana’s NPP learned why it lost?

Ghana’s New Patriotic Party went into the 2024 election as the governing party and emerged with just 88 parliamentary seats, down from 137, while President John Mahama’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) returned to power with a commanding majority.

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who ended the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration as majority leader, now leads the opposition in Parliament. He says the NPP’s defeat was caused by a “perfect storm” of difficult circumstances rather than a failure of governance. Now he is one of the Mahama government’s fiercest critics, challenging it over the economy, the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), accountability and <a href="https://absafricatv.com/lulas-comeback-what-is-the-outlook-for-brazil/” title=”Lula's comeback: What is the outlook for Brazil”>what he calls selective justice.

But has the NPP itself fully accepted why Ghanaians voted it out? And with former Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia again chosen to lead the party into the 2028 election, what exactly has changed? We sit Under the Baobab with Alexander Afenyo-Markin, minority leader in Ghana’s Parliament, to find out.
