Helen Zille best candidate to fix Joburg tender mafia: DA

The Democratic Alliance (DA) says Helen Zille was the best possible candidate to deal with Johannesburg’s “mafia state” tender system.

DA campaign manager Ashor Sarupen said there was no one better than Zille, as the party prepared to launch its local government manifesto in the metro next month.

The party said the launch would take place at a political rally on 8 August 2026, as it ramped up its campaign for the 4 November local government elections.

The DA said it would hold its manifesto launch in Johannesburg because of the metro’s significance and recent failures under poor governance.

Sarupen told the media earlier that the party’s local government election offering would be detailed in the manifesto, which was now ready for launch.

“Today we announce that we will be launching our manifesto on 8 August 2026. We will hold our manifesto launch in one of the most significant and symbolic places in South Africa. The failure of this particular metro has left it devastated and broken,” Sarupen said.

Sarupen said Zille was the perfect candidate to take over as mayor and deal with the root problems.

“What Johannesburg needs is someone who is going to deal with the fact that the mafia state has set into the supply chain networks and has the fortitude to go and deal with those tender networks and clean them out,” Sarupen said.

The party said if it did not rescue Joburg from tender mafias, it would never get the city working again.
