The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has officially gazetted Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru as the new Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou Constituency after he won the July 16, 2026 by-election with 35,440 votes.

In a gazette notice dated July 22, 2026, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon said the declaration was made under Articles 88 (4), 97 (1) (a), 101 (4) and 103 of the Constitution of Kenya, section 4 of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Act, 2011, sections 16, 38, 39 (1) and 74 of the Elections Act, 2011 and Regulation 83 of the Elections (General) Regulations, 2012.

“IEBC declares that the person listed in the Schedule hereunder was elected as the Member of National Assembly, Ol Kalou Constituency, having received the majority of the votes cast in the by-election held on July 16, 2026 and complied with the provisions of the Constitution, the Elections Act, 2011 and Elections (General) Regulations, 2012,” reads the notice.

The gazette notice identified Waweru, who contested on the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) ticket, as the elected MP after garnering 35,440 votes.

The official results announced by IEBC showed that Waweru defeated United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyaga, who received 5,450 votes.

The electoral agency said the by-election recorded a voter turnout of 57 per cent, with 41,656 ballots cast from the 73,480 registered voters in the constituency.

The closely watched by-election was, however, affected by violence after armed men travelling in unmarked vehicles allegedly attacked residents, journalists and political supporters.

Teargas was used to disperse crowds at several polling stations, leaving several people injured as tensions rose during the voting exercise.

The contest ended weeks of intense campaigns in Ol Kalou, a race that drew national attention and was viewed as a political battle between President William Ruto’s UDA party and the Democracy for the Citizens Party led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Politicians from different political sides mounted strong campaigns in the area, with allegations of cash handouts reported from both sides during the campaigns.

Waweru condemned the deaths of two people reported during the exercise, noting that the attacks happened “in full glare of the security agencies”.

“Their families deserve justice, and our constituency deserves answers,” he added.
