    Israel-Palestine: training and events

IHL Training for the Diplomatic Community

The IHL Centre’s Israel and Palestine team organises an annual training on international humanitarian law (IHL) for the diplomatic community in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).

This training is specifically tailored to the needs of members of the diplomatic community working in the context. The aim of the training is to equip participants with a foundational understanding of the international legal framework applicable during armed conflicts, and especially in situations of occupation, with a strong focus on IHL. It addresses select humanitarian issues that are of particular significance in the context and discusses how international law applies to these issues. This includes an assessment of various legal positions relating to the scope, content, and interpretation of relevant legal rules.

The training will familiarise participants with protections guaranteed in the law that are directly relevant for the issues they work on, and equip them with legal literacy to inform their engagement with various stakeholders in the context and in capital.

The training will cover topics such as:

    • Introduction to international law and the law of occupation in the oPt
    • Fragmentation, dispossession, and displacement
    • Use of force: law enforcement and conduct of hostilities
    • Deprivation of liberty
    • Implementation of the law and measures for enforcement and accountability

Please note that this training is specifically for members of the diplomatic community in Israel and the oPt. Information about the Israel and Palestine team’s IHL training for civil society and humanitarian actors is available here.

    Fall 2026 training

The fall 2026 edition of the IHL training for the diplomatic community will take place over two half-day sessions in early October.

The exact dates and location of the training will be confirmed closer to the date.

Information about the registration process will be made available on this page by September 2026. There are no costs for participating in the training.
