Portugal won its way into the 2026 World Cup’s round of 16 with Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench
Portugal manager Roberto Martinez made the decision to substitute Ronaldo out of his team’s match with Croatia in the 81st minute. The match was tied 1-1. Ruben Neves replaced the 41-year-old superstar
It wasn’t immediately clear whether Ronaldo’s substitution was injury-related or if it was simply a bid to get fresh legs onto the field, but he was seen on the broadcast with a bloody knee
Ronaldo scored Portugal’s first goal of the match in the 68th minute, converting on a penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1. It marked the first-ever knockout stage goal of Ronaldo’s World Cup career
Portugal was able to score its second goal – the eventual game-winner – in stoppage time when Gonçalo Ramos knocked a header into the back of the net in the 94th minute
“I think the team did the substitutions, we entered to press to score, and that’s what we knew, and at the end … the coach did very well,” Ramos said after the game
All eyes will be on Ronaldo’s fitness as Portugal prepares to face Spain, which is led by 18-year-old Lamine Yamal, in the round of 16
