Which Jeopardy! 31-streak winner recently ended his reign and is also a law school student? The correct response is Jamie Ding, the orange shirt-attired New Jersey bureaucrat who holds the fifth-longest win streak in the game show’s history.

On Monday, Ding went up against Greg Shahade, an international master in chess. During “Final Jeopardy,” Ding wrote the correct response to a clue about South African languages—but he wasn’t fast enough on the buzzer. His knack for proving the correct responses to questions like, “Who was Trotsky?” and “What are non-Newtonian fluids?” week after week made him a fan favorite. He exited the show with more than $880,000.

Ding is a program administrator for the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency and attends the Seton Hall University School of Law.

According to the New York Times, he is the son of a neuroscience professor and a high school math teacher who grew up in Grosse Pointe Shores, a suburb of Detroit, where he recalled losing a sixth grade spelling bee after he misspelled the word “bolero.”

Even after his post-game show life, he still has a full plate: In addition to prepping for the upcoming Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions, he filed a motion to intervene in the U.S. Department of Justice’s lawsuit demanding that New Jersey election officials submit voter rolls to the federal government, according to a story by NJ.com.

    Law.com also had coverage.
