Srinagar, July 18: The Jammu and Kashmir Judicial Academy on Saturday conducted academic sessions on technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in the administration of justice for trainee Civil Judges (Junior Division), Batch-2026, and Judicial Officers of Batch-2020 at its Mominabad campus here.
The programme was organised under the patronage of Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Kumar, Patron-in-Chief of the Governing Committee of the J&K Judicial Academy, and the guidance of Justice Rajnesh Oswal, Chairman of the Governing Committee.
The morning sessions were led by Justice Rajesh Bindal, former Judge of the Supreme Court of India, who spoke on “Technology in the Administration of Justice” and “Artificial Intelligence for Judges.”
Justice Bindal highlighted the growing role of technology in making the justice delivery system more efficient, transparent and accessible. He demonstrated the use of digital platforms such as the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG), Electronic Supreme Court Reports (eSCR) and the Bhashini application, explaining their relevance in judicial functioning, legal research and improving access to justice.
During the AI session, he discussed the applications of artificial intelligence in legal research, judgment drafting, summarisation and transcription, while stressing that AI is only a supporting tool and cannot replace the independent judicial mind. He urged judicial officers to adopt technology responsibly while ensuring that final judicial decisions always remain with the judge.
The afternoon sessions were conducted by Justice Rahul Bharti, Judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh and Member of the Governing Committee of the Judicial Academy.
Addressing both trainee Civil Judges and serving Judicial Officers, Justice Bharti emphasised the importance of continuous learning, intellectual discipline and commitment to judicial responsibilities. He encouraged participants to regularly study law, jurisprudence and evolving judicial precedents, noting that every case deserves careful and conscientious examination.
Highlighting the importance of judgment writing, he called upon judicial officers to cultivate clarity of thought, analytical reasoning and precision in judicial writing while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, diligence, humility and accountability.
Earlier, Director, J&K Judicial Academy, Naseer Ahmad Dar, outlined the significance of the programme in enhancing judicial competence through discussions on technology, artificial intelligence, judgment writing, decrees and judicial orders.
The sessions concluded with interactive discussions, during which participants exchanged views with the resource persons on contemporary issues related to judicial administration, technological advancements and judicial decision-making.
