Former Olympic and World 100m champion Justin Gatlin has voiced concern over the challenges facing Nigerian sprint star Favour Ofili, warning that administrative issues and off-track distractions risk overshadowing the career of one of athletics’ brightest talents.

The American sprint legend said Ofili possesses the ability to compete with the very best in the world but believes recurring governance issues within Nigerian athletics have created unnecessary obstacles during a crucial stage of her career.

Gatlin’s comments come amid the controversy surrounding Ofili’s failed attempt to switch her sporting allegiance to Turkey, following years of public disagreements with athletics authorities in Nigeria, including her omission from the women’s 100m at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games despite achieving the qualifying standard.

“Favour Ofili is an exceptional talent, but she’s had to deal with issues away from the track that no athlete should have to face. Those distractions can slow down the progress of any career,” Gatlin said.

The former world record holder also highlighted Nigeria’s growing reputation for producing elite sprinters, insisting the country has the raw talent to remain a force in global athletics if athletes are given the right support.

Gatlin called on administrators to create an environment built on transparency, fairness and long-term athlete development, arguing that strong systems are essential to sustaining Nigeria’s production line of world-class performers.

“Nigeria continues to produce incredible athletes, but the system has to protect and support them. Creating a level playing field and investing in athlete development will ensure the next generation has every opportunity to succeed,” he added.

Ofili remains one of Nigeria’s most accomplished sprinters, holding national records and earning multiple medals on the <a href="https://absafricatv.com/iran-defensive-strikes-on-u-s-bases-are-a-legitimate-right-under-international-law/” title=”Iran: Defensive Strikes on U.S. Bases Are a Legitimate Right Under International Law”>international stage, while continuing to establish herself among the world’s elite over the 100m and 200m.

As discussions over the future of Nigerian athletics continue, Gatlin believes improving administrative structures and prioritising athlete welfare will be vital to ensuring the country’s exceptional talent consistently translates into success on the global stage.
