For over 40 years, the Standard Bank Young Artist Awards have identified and celebrated South African artists who are pushing boundaries and shaping contemporary discourse in the arts.

South African visual artist Bronwyn Katz, originally from Kimberley, has been named the 2026 Standard Bank Young Artist for Visual Art – an honour that recognises artists who challenge boundaries and shape contemporary conversations through their work.
The Standard Bank Young Artist Awards celebrate some of South Africa’s most innovative creative voices. Katz now joins a distinguished group of artists whose work has influenced the country’s cultural landscape.

Her exhibition, Ta a-b kobab ada kaxu-da, ti khoe-du’e!, explores themes of language, memory, land and identity. Through sculpture, sound and material processes, Katz investigates how knowledge and histories are carried, remembered and transformed.

Born in Kimberley and now based in Cape Town, Katz is also a founding member of iQhiya, an eleven-woman artist collective that has showcased work internationally, including at Documenta 14.

In this episode of OFM Art Beat, Katz joins Cat van der Merwe to reflect on her journey as a Standard Bank Young Artist, her experience at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda, and the ideas that inspire her powerful visual language. sm
