The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs has unveiled plans aimed at securing direct international flights to Durban.

As reported by African Travel & Tourism Association, this is part of a comprehensive strategy to boost regional tourism and economic growth.

These efforts were highlighted by MEC Reverend Musa Zondi during his budget presentation for 2025–2026. He emphasized plans to establish direct routes to key markets including France, the UK and India.

In the year 2024, KwaZulu-Natal welcomed 620,000 international visitors and generated R2 billion in tourism revenue. This underscores the sector’s significance as a vital catalyst for regional development.

A central aspect of the initiative is enhancing air connectivity via King Shaka International Airport, alongside upgrading regional hubs in Richard’s Bay, Ulundi, Margate, Newcastle and Mkhuze.

These improvements are expected to unlock domestic tourism circuits and to draw in additional investment.

Given KZN’s extensive coastline, a commitment to tap into the ocean economy was also highlighted. This is amidst ongoing concerns regarding environmental management, particularly in relation to beach water quality.

Furthermore, the necessity of better infrastructure and sustainable destination management were expressed by various stakeholders. This would make things easier in terms of supporting support the aforementioned plans and accommodating future demand.
