Libya submits AFCON hosting bid as Egypt targets 2028 tournament

Samuel Ekow Amoasi AppiahJuly 18, 2026

The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) has officially entered the race to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), submitting its bid to stage the continent’s biggest football tournament in either 2028, 2032 or 2036.

Libya’s decision marks a major step in the country’s ambition to return to the spotlight of African football by securing hosting rights for one of the continent’s most prestigious sporting events.

The North African nation has not hosted the AFCON since 1982, when it staged the tournament for the first time. The latest bid is part of efforts by Libyan football authorities to showcase improvements in infrastructure and create an opportunity to bring the competition back to the country.

The Libyan Football Federation is expected to present its plans, including proposed venues, accommodation facilities, transport arrangements and security measures, as part of the evaluation process by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Meanwhile, Egypt has also made its intentions clear, with the Egyptian Football Association expressing interest in hosting the 2028 edition of the tournament.

Egypt remains one of Africa’s most experienced AFCON hosts, having staged the competition on multiple occasions, including the most recent edition it hosted in 2019. The country also holds the record for the most AFCON titles, with seven championships.

The potential bids from Libya and Egypt could set up a strong North African contest for future AFCON hosting rights, with both countries boasting rich football traditions and previous experience in organising major continental competitions.

CAF is expected to assess all submitted proposals before announcing the successful host nations for the upcoming editions of the Africa Cup of Nations.
