In an incident that shook a family straight from their slumber, residents of Kovaya village in the Amreli district of India faced an unusual home invasion when a full-grown lion attempted to enter a family’s kitchen.

The alarming event took place around 1:00 AM on Tuesday night, when Mulu Lakhotra and his family were asleep in their home.

The family was awakened by strange noises coming from their kitchen. Initially believing it might be a wandering cat, they were stunned to discover a lion had managed to squeeze itself between the kitchen wall and rafters.

The residents quickly rushed over with flashlights and captured videos of the unexpected intruder on their mobile phones.

As per Times of India, the lion had entered the property by scaling a boundary wall.

“The lion entered the house by jumping over the 12 or 13-foot wall. The family began screaming and neighbours quickly gathered. We made sounds cautiously to ensure the lion did not panic and harm anyone,” said village sarpanch Jina Lakhotra.

Forest officials promptly responded to the emergency call and successfully removed the wild animal from the premises without any injuries to residents or the lion.

According to Jayen Patel, deputy conservator of forests for the Shentrunji Division, this particular lion belongs to a pride of six lions currently located near Jafrabad.

“They are currently near Jafrabad and occasionally venture into villages in search of prey, especially when they do not find stray livestock. Such incidents are extremely rare,” Patel explained.

The incident, while frightening, isn’t entirely surprising to locals.

Kovaya village’s geographical location between forested areas and the coastline makes lion sightings relatively common, and residents have grown somewhat accustomed to the big cats’ presence in the region. The nearby Pipavav port also frequently reports lion sightings.

Wildlife officials note that approximately 150 lions inhabit Amreli district, and there have been previous incidents of lions climbing walls to access verandas and cattle sheds, though kitchen intrusions remain uncommon.
