Afrobeats runs the charts, your group chat playlists and half of TikTok. Burna Boy sells out stadiums. Tems has Grammys. Rema’s “Calm Down” basically lived on the radio for a year.

But none of it exists without Fela Kuti, the Nigerian bandleader who invented Afrobeat in the 1970s. He turned 88, and Vinyl Me, Please is celebrating with an exclusive 4LP box set of his defining recordings. New members can get it for $149. Here’s why it deserves a spot on your shelf.

TL;DR: Meet the Man Behind Afrobeats

    • Fela Kuti invented Afrobeat, the blueprint for today’s Afrobeats stars.
    • Vinyl Me, Please is releasing an exclusive 4LP Best of the Black President box set ($179 MSRP).
    • New members on the 3-month plan ($149) get the box as their first record.

    Who Was Fela Kuti?

Fela Anikulapo Kuti(1938 to 1997) was a bandleader, saxophonist and activist whose fans called him the Black President. His mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, was a pioneering women’s rights activist, so speaking up ran in the family.

After a 1969 trip to the US, where he soaked up James Brown’s funk and the Black Power movement, Fela went home to Lagos and built Afrobeat: long, hypnotic grooves of West <a href="https://absafricatv.com/is-khawa-khawa-a-north-african-myth/” title=”Is "khawa khawa" a North African myth?”>African rhythms, jazz horns and funk guitars, with lyrics aimed squarely at corruption and military rule. His hit “Zombie” mocked Nigerian soldiers, and an estimated 1,000 of them raided his compound in response. He kept recording anyway. His story later became the Tony-winning Broadway musical Fela!

    Afrobeat vs. Afrobeats

    Yes, the “S” matters.

    • Afrobeat: Fela’s genre. Think 10- to 20-minute songs, big horn sections and protest lyrics.
    • Afrobeats: the umbrella term for today’s West African pop, which mixes Afrobeat’s DNA with hip-hop, dancehall and R&B. Shorter songs, built for the club and the algorithm.

So when people say Afrobeats is having a moment, what they mean is that a sound Fela built in Lagos 50 years ago finally took over the planet. Hear where it started.

    The Fela Family Tree

The link to today’s stars is sometimes literal. Burna Boy’s grandfather, Benson Idonije, was Fela’s first band manager, and Burna grew up hearing Fela records at home. You can hear it in his horns and his willingness to get political in the middle of a banger.

Fela’s sons Femi and Seun Kuti still carry the original sound, with Seun fronting Egypt 80, Fela’s last band. And drummer Tony Allen, who Fela said made Afrobeat possible, went on to work with Damon Albarn and Flea.

Why It Sounds Better on Vinyl

Hot take: Fela is wasted on shuffle. A single track often filled an entire side of an LP, with the horns and drums building for minutes before he even started singing. Vinyl is the format these songs were made for, and the slow burn is the whole point.

The Deal: A 4LP Fela Kuti Box Set for $149

VMP‘s exclusive edition of Best of the Black President collects Fela’s defining recordings across four LPs, with lacquers cut by mastering engineer Cicely Balston. It ships now, so there’s no pre-order wait.

New members who join Vinyl Me, Please on the 3-month plan pay $149 and get the box set as their first record. The next two months bring more curated vinyl. Honest fine print: the membership renews automatically, and the offer runs while supplies last.

    The Bottom Line

Before the stadium tours and TikTok dances, there was a guy in Lagos playing 20-minute songs about corruption and refusing to stop. Next time Afrobeats comes on at a party, you’ll know whose birthday to toast. Grab the Fela box set while it lasts.
