Lufthansa Group has announced the appointment of Lorenza Maggio as the next Chief Executive Officer of Brussels Airlines. This strategic leadership change places a seasoned Lufthansa insider at the helm of Belgium’s national carrier during a pivotal era of network transformation and corporate integration.

Maggio is set to succeed Dorothea von Boxberg, who will step down on August 31 following a tenure defined by the airline’s post-pandemic recovery and a return to profitability. The appointment is currently pending approval by the Board of Directors of SN Airholding.

Beyond her role as CEO, Maggio will serve as the Executive Board Representative to the European Commission. This dual role underscores the unique geopolitical position of Brussels Airlines, operating as both a national flag carrier and the Lufthansa Group’s primary entity based in the EU’s political capital.

A Strategic Appointment Rooted in Group Synergy

Lufthansa’s choice of Maggio signals a preference for continuity and internal integration over external disruption. The 48-year-old Italian executive brings a deep pedigree within the Lufthansa ecosystem, most recently serving as Chief Strategy and Integration Officer on the Board of ITA Airways.

Her previous experience is extensive, having managed Lufthansa Group’s sales across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Additionally, she held leadership roles in brand and customer strategy at Eurowings and managed a subsidiary of the LSG Group.

Industry analysts note that Maggio’s leadership style is characterized by strategic execution rather than public branding. This “low-profile” approach aligns with the current corporate culture of the Lufthansa Group, focusing on operational stability and seamless integration across its various airline brands.

Defining the Role of Belgium’s National Carrier

Brussels Airlines is not merely another subsidiary; it occupies a specialized niche within the Lufthansa Group. While the group’s other carriers focus on different regional strengths, Brussels Airlines serves as the primary Africa specialist.

The airline’s strategic value is built on three pillars:

    • African Connectivity: Leveraging a network inherited from Sabena, the carrier serves 18 destinations across sub-Saharan Africa.
    • Diplomatic Hub: Acting as the primary link between Brussels, Europe, Africa, and North America.
    • Star Alliance Integration: Serving as a critical Western European hub for the global alliance.

This specialization explains the airline’s limited presence in Asian markets. Lufthansa Group intentionally avoids duplicating long-haul Asian services already managed by Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, and ITA Airways, instead positioning Brussels Airlines as the definitive gateway to Africa.

    Operational Advantages and Group Synergies

Integration into the Lufthansa Group provides Brussels Airlines with structural advantages that smaller independent carriers lack. These synergies include joint fleet planning, integrated commercial sales, and the massive purchasing power of the parent group.

From a passenger perspective, the benefits include access to the Miles & More loyalty program and seamless connectivity to over 1,100 global destinationsStarlink-powered high-speed Wi-Fi across the fleet starting in 2026, part of a broader 850-aircraft investment by the Lufthansa Group

    Navigating Economic and Political Headwinds

Despite its strategic strengths, Maggio inherits a complex set of challenges that have pressured the airline’s bottom line.

    External Disruptions
The carrier has been frequently impacted by nationwide Belgian strikes and demonstrations. While the airline is rarely the direct party in these labor disputes, the resulting flight cancellations contributed significantly to profit declines in 2025 and the first quarter of 2026.

    Financial Pressures
Geopolitical instability in the Middle East and fluctuating fuel prices have driven up operating costs. While Lufthansa’s fuel hedging programs have mitigated some risk, the impact was evident in the performance metrics of early 2026.

    Fleet Modernization
While the airline has added eight Airbus A320neo aircraft since late 2023 to improve efficiency on European routes, the long-haul fleet remains a point of contention. Ae replacement of the aging Airbus A330 fleet with new-generation aircraft

    Performance Metrics and Recent Growth

The airline continues to demonstrate resilience through product investment and brand loyalty, even as margins remain tight.

    Metric 2025 Data
    Passenger Volume Over 9.1 Million
    Total Revenues Above €1.6 Billion
    Adjusted EBIT €28 Million

To maintain its competitive edge, Brussels Airlines has recently invested in the renovation of “THE LOFT” lounge in Brussels and upgraded its Premium Economy offerings. The airline has also leaned into its role as a cultural ambassador, partnering with Belgian filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah for a new cinematic safety video and expanding its onboard Belgian culinary partnerships.

    The Path Forward for 2026

Lorenza Maggio’s tenure begins at a time when the Lufthansa Group is accelerating its transformation. Her success will likely be measured by her ability to balance the “Belgian identity” of the airline with the necessity of deeper integration into the German-led group.

If Maggio can successfully mitigate the impact of regional political disruptions and modernize the long-haul fleet, Brussels Airlines is poised to solidify its status as the premier gateway to Africa for the Star Alliance network.

Maggio’s transition from ITA Airways to Brussels Airlines marks a strategic move to apply integration expertise to one of Europe’s most specialized a
