The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) has urged President Bola Tinubu to immediately assent to the bill establishing the Federal University of Medical Laboratory Science and Technology, Jos, describing it as a landmark legislation that will transform healthcare education, research and innovation in the country.
The association said the bill, recently passed by the Senate, repeals the Act establishing the Federal College of Medical Laboratory Science and Technology, Jos, and upgrades the institution to a specialised university.
Even as it expressed confidence that President Tinubu would assent to the bill, the association urged him to do so without delay, saying the establishment of the university would be a lasting investment in medical education, healthcare innovation and human capital development.
In a statement on Wednesday, AMLSN National President, Dr. Casmir Ifeanyi, said presidential assent would accelerate healthcare transformation, strengthen national health security and expand opportunities for specialised medical education.
He described the Senate’s passage of the bill as “a historic victory for healthcare education, scientific innovation and national development,” saying it demonstrated the National Assembly’s commitment to building a stronger health workforce and expanding educational opportunities for Nigerians.
Speaking on behalf of over 150,000 medical laboratory scientists nationwide, Ifeanyi commended the leadership and members of the National Assembly for supporting what he called a transformative initiative.
According to him, the new university will serve as a centre of excellence for diagnostics, biotechnology, research, innovation and advanced healthcare training, while expanding admission opportunities, producing highly skilled professionals and strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to tackle emerging health challenges.
He said the institution aligns with the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda by expanding medical education, increasing training capacity, creating jobs and positioning Nigeria as a leading destination for medical education and innovation in Africa.
He also praised the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate; the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako; and the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, for their contributions to the proposed upgrade.
Ifeanyi particularly commended Salako for championing skills-based education and micro-credentialing, saying the approach offers practical solutions to youth unemployment, workforce shortages and the migration of skilled health professionals.
