KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will be the first witness at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry when public hearings open in Pretoria on Wednesday morning.
The commission, chaired by retired Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseni Madlanga, is tasked with examining allegations that senior police officials — including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu — have meddled in law enforcement operations and maintained links with criminal syndicates.

Allegations of Criminal Syndicate Infiltration
In July, Mkhwanazi alleged that a powerful criminal network had infiltrated several arms of the state, including intelligence services, the judiciary, prosecutors, and other critical institutions.
The claims sent shockwaves through the country, raising serious questions about corruption and the reach of organised crime within South Africa’s law enforcement system.
The Madlanga Commission will now investigate the scale of infiltration within the South African Police Service (SAPS), Crime Intelligence, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the State Security Agency, Correctional Services, and the judiciary.

The inquiry has been given three months to compile and submit its preliminary report, with the final report due in six months.
The outcome of the hearings is expected to shape public confidence in law enforcement and the justice system, as the commission unpacks the allegations made by one of the country’s most senior police officers.
