    Massive fire breaks out at Haldia Refinery in West Bengal, several workers injured

    A massive fire broke out in naphtha-carrying pipeline at Haldia Petrochemicals Limited (HPL) unit in West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district in the early hours of Tuesday, leaving more than 20 people wounded.The injured citizens were rescued from the site and taken to Haldia Sub-Divisional Hospital. A police officer told PTI that five of them were later shifted to Tamluk Medical College and Hospital, where two were reported to be in critical condition.The blaze was first spotted around 2.45 am, the official said, adding that it quickly spread to Chiranjibpur in ward 13 of Haldia Municipality, engulfing several houses in the vicinity.

    The rescue authorities deployed twelve fire trucks, and firefighting operations in the unit are still underway. The cause of the fire remains unknown.More than 20 people were injured after a major fire broke out in a naphtha-carrying pipeline of Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd (HPL) in West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district in the early hours of Tuesday, police told PTI.Haldia Petrochemicals, in a statement, said that the exact cause of the incident is currently under investigation.”We are aware of an incident that occurred at our Haldia facility, in which a few people have reportedly sustained injuries. Our thoughts are with those affected, and we are extending all necessary support to the concerned authorities,” it said.Preliminary information, cited by the company, suggested that the incident may have occurred in the vicinity of an unauthorised naphtha theft point located in the plant vicinity.”The exact cause of the incident is currently under investigation in coordination with the relevant authorities. At this stage, it would be premature to comment further or attribute responsibility until the investigation is complete,” the petrochem firm said.

    Haldia train services impact

    Fire at the Haldia petrochem unit has also damaged overhead railway equipment near the site, disrupting train services.The halt in train services led to disruptions for early morning passengers traveling from Haldia to Panskura or Howrah. The morning train from Haldia as delayed as the flames spread dangerously close to the railway line, TOI reported, adding that daily commuters faced inconvenience.Add ET Logo
