The fallout from the 2026 FIFA World Cup has intensified speculation over FIFA’s leadership, with reports claiming several European football federations want Nasser Al-Khelaïfi to challenge Gianni Infantino in the 2027 presidential election.

Infantino has faced criticism throughout the tournament over a series of controversies, including refereeing issues, logistical decisions and environmental concerns linked to his frequent travel. Despite the backlash, the current FIFA president still enjoys strong support from Africa and Asia, making him the favorite to secure a fourth term.

According to talkSPORT, UEFA has already started exploring alternatives behind the scenes. UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin reportedly has no interest in running for FIFA’s top job and instead prefers to seek another term at UEFA. As a result, several European federations have identified Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi as their preferred candidate. Legia Warsaw president Dariusz Mioduski has also emerged as another possible option if the Qatari executive decides not to enter the race.

Al-Khelaïfi has built considerable influence in world football since taking charge of Paris Saint-Germain in 2011. In addition to leading PSG, he serves as chairman of the European Club Association and holds senior positions within QSI, beIN Sports and the Qatar Tennis Federation. However, talkSPORT reports that he does not currently view the FIFA presidency as a priority. If he eventually launches a campaign, he would likely need to step away from several of his existing roles.
