Kenyans are living longer than they did three years ago, with the country’s life expectancy increasing from 63.5 years in 2022 to 66.8 years in 2025, according to the National Treasury.

The figures were presented on Wednesday, July 22, during the launch of the 2027/2028 Budget Preparation Process, where the Treasury outlined achievements under President William Ruto’s administration.

The latest figure surpasses the World Bank’s 2024 projections of 64 years for Kenya, showing improvements in healthcare and living conditions among many Kenyans.

According to the World Bank, Uganda’s life expectancy stood at 68 years in 2024, while Tanzania recorded 67 years, placing Kenya’s latest 2025 estimate within the same range.

The World Bank defined life expectancy at birth as the average number of years a newborn is expected to live if current mortality patterns remain unchanged throughout their lifetime.

The improvement in Kenya’s life expectancy was attributed to better healthcare, improved nutrition, enhanced sanitation, and improved socioeconomic conditions, which have reduced deaths.

Initial reports also show that women in Kenya continue to outlive men, with women having an average life expectancy of about 66.5 years, while men are expected to live for between 60 and 62 years.

Beyond healthcare, the Treasury outlined improvements in the education sector, noting that the pupil-to-teacher ratio in education fell from 41:1 in 2022 to 38:1 in 2025 following the recruitment of 100,000 teachers.

The government also reported increased enrolment across pre-primary, primary, secondary, university and technical institutions over the period.

In the environment sector, the government saidmore than 1.7 billion trees have been planted under the 15 Billion Trees Programmesince Ruto took office in 2022.

It also reported the restoration of 389,685 hectares of degraded forests and landscapes, the establishment of 40,900.94 hectares of agroforestry on farmlands and 13,426 hectares of commercial forest plantations in drylands.

The Treasury said the achievements demonstrate the government’s continued investment in health, education and environmental conservation as part of efforts to improve the quality of life for Kenyans.
