Fast-rising Nollywood actor Victory Michael, popularly known as Big Mike, has reached a major career milestone after earning his first-ever award nomination on the international stage
The actor has been nominated for Best International Actor for his performance in the film Unboxing Love at the Toronto International Film Festival, marking what he describes as a dream come true and a significant step in his journey beyond Nollywood
Speaking in an interview, Michael said the nomination came as a pleasant surprise, especially as it is his first recognition since venturing fully into acting
“This is my first ever nomination and I’m so blessed. I feel so grateful that my first nomination is an international nomination that carries so much weight,” he said
According to the actor, he is the only Nigerian nominated in the Best International Actor category, where he will compete alongside actors from countries including the United States, Canada and Japan
“Somehow they found me worthy to be nominated among other international actors. It feels so good and it’s a major milestone for me because I’ve always dreamed of going beyond Nollywood,” he added
The nominated film, Unboxing Love, was shot last year and is scheduled to have its premiere during the festival, billed to hold from September 4 to 12 in Toronto
Michael traced his acting journey to his secondary school days at Assemblies of God Bethel Seminary, Owerri, where he joined the school’s drama group and discovered his passion for performance
He recalled that regular appearances in church drama productions not only sharpened his acting skills but also earned him recognition among his peers
Although his family initially wanted him to pursue a career in medicine or engineering, Michael said his passion for storytelling never faded. He later began creating comedy skits with his brother using an Android phone before progressing to DSLR productions and attending auditions
The actor, who studied at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), said his long-term ambition has always been to build an international acting career while continuing to contribute to Nollywood
“My dream has always been to go more international. I’m hoping this is the first step to achieving international recognition and building an international career,” he said
While declining to reveal details of his upcoming projects due to contractual obligations, Michael assured fans that they should expect more movies from him in both the Nigerian and international film industries
Known for his performances in films including Family Fire, Driven by Love, Act of Love and The Gateman, the actor said he remains committed to telling stories that resonate with audiences across cultures
