In a delightful fusion of travel and fandom, Japan’s Oita Airport has rebranded itself as “Hello Kitty Airport.” This transformation aims to attract tourists during the ongoing World Expo in Osaka.

Located in Oita Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, the airport’s new identity will be in place for six months, offering visitors a unique and charming experience.

As travellers enter the airport, they are greeted by vibrant displays featuring Hello Kitty and other beloved Sanrio characters. The airport boasts Instagram-worthy photo spots and colourful banners, enhancing the travel experience with a touch of cuteness. Hello Kitty, created by Yuko Shimizu and designed by Yuko Yamaguchi, has become a global phenomenon, recognised by her signature red bow and three whiskers.

    Strengthening regional tourism

To further promote tourism, a shuttle bus service will connect the airport to Harmonyland, a nearby Sanrio character theme park, from August to October. Oita Governor Kiichiro Sato expressed optimism about the initiative.

“We aim to share the charms of Oita, especially during this significant time when awareness of the region will be at its peak due to the expo”, as previously reported by CNN.

Aya Komaki, president of Sanrio Entertainment, shared plans to develop Harmonyland into an “entertainment and resort area,” promising even more magic for visitors seeking immersive experiences.

A country where airports embrace pop culture

Oita isn’t the first to take inspiration from the nation’s rich animation and manga heritage. Other Japanese airports have also embraced this cultural phenomenon. Yonago Kitaro Airport, for example, is named after a popular anime character from the “GeGeGe no Kitaro” series.

In a similar move, Tottori city renamed its airport to Tottori Sand Dunes Conan Airport in 2015. The name honours Detective Conan (also known as Case Closed), the child sleuth who takes on criminals with Bond-like gadgetry in one of Japan’s most iconic manga and anime franchises.

A blend of culture and fandom

Oita Airport’s new identity not only celebrates the whimsical world of Sanrio but also positions the region as a must-visit destination. This initiative reflects a brilliant blend of local culture and global fandom, inviting wonder and excitement that promises to leave a lasting impression on all who visit.
