Kenya is a world-famous tourist destination and is known for its wildlife safaris at Masai Mara, national parks, culture, food and more. But foreign travellers, including Indians, staying for less than 12 months will now need to buy travel health insurance to visit the country. Here’s what it means!

Kenya Introduces Travel Health Insurance For Foreigners

Kenya is getting a lot of popularity these days because of its wildlife safaris, stunning landscapes and rich culture. Wildlife lovers, including celebrities like Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan and more, have a deep connection to Masai Mara National Reserve and keep visiting the place to see lions, leopards, elephants and more. Not just that, but Kenya is also known for the Great Migration, which happens every year when millions of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles travel from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara.

So, if you are someone who is planning to visit the place, there is an important change. You will now need to show proof of mandatory travel health insurance. The decision was announced by the High Commission of India in Nairobi on their official X account. The advisory states that the Government of Kenya has introduced this new rule for foreign visitors staying for less than 12 months and entering Kenya on or after October 5, 2026.

How Can Indians Get Travel Health Insurance For Kenya?

Indian nationals planning to travel to Kenya for a holiday or business are advised to get the prescribed insurance before their departure. This will help them avoid inconvenience during boarding or immigration clearance.

Travellers who need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) must obtain the prescribed insurance as part of their application through the official portal, www.etakenya.go.ke. Those who already hold a valid eTA can obtain the insurance through the official eCitizen insurance portal, insurance.ecitizen.go.ke.

The High Commission of India also mentioned that existing travel or medical insurance policies do not replace the prescribed mandatory insurance. For further details, travellers may consult the official Government of Kenya portals.

So, if you are planning to visit Kenya soon, make sure to keep this advisory in mind!
