Five individuals were taken into custody following an alleged break-in at a tuck shop located in Woody Glen, near Hammarsdale. This incident occurred amidst increased security measures implemented by authorities during ongoing protests against illegal immigration throughout KwaZulu-Natal.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsamqa Ntuli praised police and other law enforcement bodies for their prompt actions, stating that criminal behavior would not be permitted under the pretext of protest.

“We acknowledge and respect that civil society has the right to protest and voice their concerns. However, we urge all those participating in today’s marches against illegal immigration to do so within the prescript of the law,” Ntuli said.

The Premier characterized these arrests as a clear warning to anyone contemplating involvement in unlawful conduct.

“The arrest in Woody Glen is a stern warning to everyone that we will not tolerate any acts of criminality. We cannot and will not allow anarchy and lawlessness to be the order of the day,” he said.

Ntuli indicated that law enforcement bodies, private security firms, and community safety organizations had been stationed to oversee the region all day and would sustain a noticeable presence to uphold peace and order.

Furthermore, the Premier revealed that the provincial administration had set up a rapid response coordination hub in Durban, along with comparable facilities in all district municipalities, designed to manage a quick reaction to any criminal acts or disturbances.

Additionally, every member of the provincial executive council has been dispatched to their assigned districts to collaborate with local leaders in averting any disruptions.

Ntuli stated that this synchronized deployment was intended to strengthen the rule of law throughout KwaZulu-Natal, both during the demonstrations and in the future.
