- Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly praised Elon Musk as a ‘real genius’ and confirmed ongoing contact with Musk and American partners regarding satellite technology.
- Russia and the US coordinate to prevent interference between Russia’s Rassvet satellites and SpaceX’s Starlink network in orbit.
- Putin highlighted the necessity of direct communication to ensure safe and efficient operation of spacecraft from both nations.
- The situation in Ukraine underscores the strategic role of satellite systems, with Ukraine experiencing Starlink connectivity restrictions imposed by SpaceX during the conflict.
Speaking at the Russia-Africa Summit held in Moscow, Putin explained that communications are ongoing to manage space operations and support Russia’s domesticsatellite internetinitiative, known as Rassvet.
Putin emphasized the practical need for direct communication with American counterparts to ensure spacecraft operate without conflict.
According to a translation of his remarks reported by the BBC, Putin remarked, “He’s a genius, a real genius,” adding that “We are in close contact with our American partners, includingMr. Musk”.
The Russian president explained that working together is crucial so that Russia’s Rassvet satellites and SpaceX’s Starlink network do not “interfere with each other in orbit“.
Putin noted, “We and our American partners value this mutually, and despite all the political questions, we are working hard“.

Further reinforcing these statements, BBC revealed that the Russian Embassy in South Africa confirmed that close space communications continue and described Rassvet as “Russia’s Starlink alternative“.
The revelation of high-level satellite discussions between Moscow and the SpaceX founder coincides with ongoing reliance on satellite systems during the conflict in Eastern Europe.
Defense forces in Ukraine have depended heavily on Starlink connections to maintain operational communications.

However, BBC reported that Ukrainian troopsrecently suffered unexpected connectivity issues, which Musk acknowledged occurred because SpaceX intentionally restricted Starlink access.
While Starlink maintains roughly 13,000 satellites in orbit compared to a few dozen for Rassvet, the intersection of commercial space technology and international relations remains a focal point.
