China State Shipbuilding Corp or CSSC handed over Wontanara to mining giant Rio Tinto. The self-unloading ship will be used to move iron ore in the Simandou project in Guinea, West Africa.
China Daily, quoted Tuesday, July 21, said that Wontanara was built by CSSC Chengxi Shipyard and was delivered at the Yangzhou shipyard dock on Tuesday. This ship is the first unit of five similar ships ordered by Rio Tinto.
CSSC claims Wontanara holds three records in its class. The ship has the largest carrying capacity for cargo transfer in shallow waters, the fastest cargo unloading process, and the ability to sail in two directions.
Wontanara has a length of 215 meters, a width of 42 meters, and a depth of 14.5 meters. Its cargo space has a capacity of 29,000 cubic meters and can carry 41,800 tons of cargo.
The ship uses a full diesel-electric propulsion system. The diesel engine produces electricity which is then used to drive the ship’s motor.
Before being handed over, Wontanara underwent a sea trial for 12 days in the East China Sea from the end of June to the beginning of July.
