    President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent him and lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, UNGA, in New York, United States.

    According to a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to The President on Media & Communications

    (Office of The Vice President), Shettima will lead a high-level delegation comprising Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State; Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State; ministers and other senior government officials.

    The 81st UNGA General Debate will hold from September 22 to 28, 2026, under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”

    At the General Debate, Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement, outlining the country’s position and priorities on major global issues with implications for national development, peace and security, economic growth and international cooperation.

    The Vice President will also participate in high-level meetings during the UNGA week, including engagements on the Right to Development, climate action and other issues of strategic importance to Nigeria and the African continent.

    Shettima is also expected to join other world leaders at the traditional reception for Heads of Delegation and participate in a series of bilateral meetings with leaders of other countries, international organisations and development partners on the sidelines of the General Assembly.

    The engagements will provide Nigeria an opportunity to advance President Tinubu’s economic diplomacy, deepen strategic partnerships and strengthen the country’s voice on reform of the global financial architecture, sustainable development, climate finance and multilateral cooperation.

    VP Shettima will return to Nigeria at the conclusion of his engagements in New York.

    LAWGAN Condemns Death Of 37 Suspected Illegal Miners In NSCDC Custody

    BREAKING: Ace Nollywood Actor Olu Jacobs Dies At 84

    NBC Fines Arise TV N2m Over Fake Report On Tinubu

    The Law Graduates Association of Nigeria (LAWGAN) has condemned the reported death of 37 suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State.

    According to LAWGAN, while it recognises the responsibility of government and security agencies to enforce the law and combat illegal mining and other criminal activities, such enforcement must at all times be carried out within the confines of the law and with strict respect for the fundamental rights and dignity of every person in custody.

    In a statement by Kayode Bello and

    Ojo Clement , LAWGAN President and Public Relations Officer respectively, the group said that the circumstances surrounding the death of the 37 persons in government custody were deeply troubling and demanded a thorough, independent, transparent and unhindered investigation.

    “The fact that the deceased were arrested on suspicion of illegal mining does not deprive them of their constitutional right to life, dignity and humane treatment”, it said.

    LAWGAN therefore called on the Federal Government and the Nigeria Police Force, alongside all other relevant investigative authorities, to ensure that the circumstances leading to the death were fully investigated and that the truth was made known to the Nigerian public.

    It said: “In particular, the investigation should establish:

    “1. The precise circumstances under which the 37 persons were arrested and detained;

    “2. The number of persons held in the detention facility and the conditions under which they were kept;

    “3. The medical attention and welfare provided to the detainees while in custody;

    “4. The actual scientific and medical cause of the death;

    “5. Whether there was any act of abuse, negligence, excessive force, unlawful treatment or other misconduct by any officer;

    “6. Whether the deaths could have been prevented and whether any officer failed in a duty owed to the detainees; and

    “7. The individual responsibility, if any, of officers who participated in the arrest, detention, supervision or mal- treatment of the deceased.”

    LAWGAN acknowledged the steps already announced by the Federal Government, including the suspension of the Niger State NSCDC Commandant and other officers and the constitution of an investigative committee. It urged the authorities to ensure that these measures result in a credible determination of the facts and, where the evidence establishes criminal responsibility, prosecution in accordance with the law.

    “We equally call for the preservation of all relevant evidence, including detention records, CCTV footage where available, medical records, photographs, communication records and other materials capable of assisting investigators in establishing the truth.

    “LAWGAN strongly believes that no person should lose his or her life in government custody under circumstances that remain unexplained or questionable. Where evidence ultimately establishes that any person died as a result of unlawful conduct or criminal abuse of power by the officers, those responsible must be held accountable through due process of law.

    “At the same time, we urge the public to allow the investigation to proceed without resort to violence or unlawful retaliation. Justice must be pursued through lawful and constitutional means.

    “The Nigerian people deserve to know what happened to these 37 persons. Their families deserve answers. The nation deserves accountability”, the statement added

    EFCC Has No General Statutory Power To Regulate Lawyers’ Professional Fees

    The Law Graduates Association of Nigeria (LAWGAN) has faulted the recent statement by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) warning legal practitioners against charging clients in foreign currencies and threatening prosecution of lawyers found culpable.

    While LAWGAN recognises the statutory mandate of the EFCC to investigate and prosecute economic and financial crimes, we respectfully emphasise that the EFCC does not have a general statutory mandate to regulate, fix or determine the professional fees of legal practitioners.

    According to a statement on Tuesday by LAWGAN President Kayode Bello and the group’s Public Relations Officer Ojo Clement, under the Legal Practitioners Act, the regulation of professional charges of legal practitioners is vested within the statutory framework established for that purpose, including the Legal Practitioners Remuneration Committee.

    The statement noted: “LAWGAN therefore calls on the EFCC to clearly identify the specific statutory provision creating the alleged offence of charging professional fees in foreign currency before threatening criminal prosecution on that basis. The fact that the Naira is Nigeria’s legal tender, without more, does not automatically establish criminal liability.

    “We further emphasise that while no lawyer is above the law, no law-enforcement agency is above the law either. The exercise of investigative and prosecutorial powers must remain strictly within the limits of the law.

    “LAWGAN supports lawful collaboration between the EFCC, NBA and other relevant institutions in combating genuine financial crimes and professional misconduct. However, such collaboration must be guided by due process, statutory authority and respect for the rule of law.”
