Six <a href="https://absafricatv.com/is-khawa-khawa-a-north-african-myth/” title=”Is "khawa khawa" a North African myth?”>African startups have received a combined $400,000 in catalytic grant funding through the 2026 FINCA Ventures Prize Competition, an initiative designed to support early-stage businesses developing solutions in financial inclusion, sustainable agriculture and food systems.

The competition, now in its third year, attracted more than 700 applications from entrepreneurs across Africa.

The six finalists presented their businesses to a panel of investors and industry experts on October 6, 2026, at an event hosted by Cisco in San Francisco, United States.

The competition recognised startups in two categories: fintech for financial inclusion and sustainable agriculture and food systems.

Kenyan fintech startup VunaPay emerged as a first-place winner, securing $100,000 to expand its digital payment and financing infrastructure for smallholder farmers.

Co-founded by Gatwiri Njogu-Mokaya and Koya Matsuno, VunaPay enables agricultural cooperatives to facilitate faster payments while improving farmers’ access to formal financial services.

Another Kenyan startup, Kumbatia Seafood, received $100,000 in the sustainable agriculture category.

Co-founded by Bernard Iha Thoya, Will Gertler and Nelson Ondego Mumata, Kumbatia Seafood supports small-scale fishing communities through financing, cold-chain logistics and improved access to premium seafood markets.

The company plans to use its funding to expand operations along Kenya’s Swahili Coast.

    Second-place winners received $60,000 each.

Kenyan fintech nesti, co-founded by Christabel Ojuok and David Kimani, is developing technology that allows renters to build credit histories through consistent rental payments.

Zimbabwean agritech eAgro, founded by Tafadzwa Chikwereti and Golden Nhunhama, provides AI-powered agricultural guidance accessible through basic mobile phones, including in areas without internet connectivity.

    Third-place winners received $40,000 each.

ChatCash, operating in Rwanda and Zimbabwe, helps small businesses manage digital storefronts and payments through WhatsApp.

Kenya’s Pollen Patrollers uses solar-powered technology and artificial intelligence to improve pollination services, support beekeepers and strengthen agricultural productivity.

FINCA Global CEO Andrée Simon highlighted the importance of supporting African entrepreneurs early, particularly those developing practical solutions for underserved communities.

FINCA Ventures Managing Director Winnie Mwangi also emphasised that catalytic funding can help promising startups build credibility, attract additional investment and expand their operations.

Three of the six winning companies are led or co-led by women.

The competition underscores the growing role of impact-focused capital in supporting African startups working to improve financial access, agricultural productivity and economic resilience across underserved markets.
