South Africa welcomed close to 7.5 million international touristsbetween January and August 2026, reinforcing the country’s tourism recovery as visitor demand continues to strengthen across major destinations.

More than one million international tourists arrived in August alone, up 7.4% from the same month last year, according to the latest figures from Statistics South Africa and the Department of Tourism.

The performance follows a strong first half. UN Tourism reported a 12% increase in international arrivals to South Africa during the first six months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, placing the country among the 20 best-performing destinations globally among those reporting data.

Provinces with National Parks and land borders performed best

The recovery is being felt particularly in the country’s tourism provinces with land borders such as Mpumalanga with the Kruger Park and Limpopo with Kruger, Mapungubwe and Marakele National Parks.

Mpumalanga has a border with Eswatini and Mozambique while Limpopo shares a border with Botswana and Zimbabwe. Limpopo is the true gateway to the northern sections of the Kruger and other nature-based attractions. Limpopo is the province offering the most nature-based attractions in South Africa.

Both provinces recorded higher arrivals between January and August thanGauteng, South Africa main international gateway because of Johannesburg’s international airport and business tourism activity.Despite the presence of popular Cape Town and the Cape Winelands,Western Cape had a market share of only 9.4% of all international arrivals.

KwaZulu-Natal is another important tourism market in terms of image, combining Durban’s coastal attractions with safari, cultural and adventure products. It however generated only 3.1% of all international arrivals, due to a strong decline in international flights at Durban International Airport (-28.6%) between January and August 2026.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille said the latest results demonstrate the need to turn higher visitor numbers into broader economic gains, including investment, employment and opportunities for local communities.

“The focus must now be on converting that demand into investment, jobs and economic opportunities,” she said.

South Africa’s international largest overseas market with 37,134 arrivals, followed by the UK with 25,749 and Germany with 14,731. The figures underline the importance of maintaining a broad international market base rather than relying on a single region

The government is now using the stronger tourism performance to promote additional investment. The South African Tourism Infrastructure Investment Summit is bringing together tourism stakeholders and investors around new products, experiences and infrastructure projects.

The Department of Tourism argues that rising demand strengthens the case for diversifying South Africa’s tourism offering and expanding capacity beyond established gateways and attractions.
