Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy Limited (SWREL), a renewable EPC company, has entered a 50-50 joint venture with Hassan Allam Construction, a contractor in Egypt and the MENA region. In a press release, the firm said it secured an approximately USD 560 million order for the West Minya Solar Power Project in Minya Governorate, Egypt. Once completed, the company said this 1,000 MWac Solar project integrated with a 600 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) can become one of Egypt’s largest utility-scale renewable energy developments.
The joint venture will be responsible for the full engineering, procurement, and construction of the solar power plant, including the installation of photovoltaic generation facilities, battery energy storage infrastructure, grid interconnection works, transmission facilities, and all associated balance-of-plant and supporting systems required for project delivery
Sterling and Wilson’s Third Project
Speaking on the order win, Chandra Kishore Thakur, Global CEO, Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy Group, said, “We are proud to support Egypt’s decarbonisation journey and contribute to strengthening energy security across the wider MENA region through this landmark project. As one of the world’s leading solar EPC companies, we bring deep expertise and proven execution capabilities that will help unlock the region’s vast renewable energy potential. Our company remains committed to delivering the project within the stipulated timeline while upholding the highest standards of safety, quality, and operational excellence.”
“This third GW scale order received in a span of 9 months reflects the increasing size of PV projects, and continued trust and confidence that customers place in the company’s capabilities to deliver large-scale solar projects, including those involving complex technologies such as Battery Energy Storage Systems”
Strengthening SWREL’s Presence in Africa
The Egypt project further strengthens Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy’s presence in the African renewable energy market, where the company has been expanding its footprint through large-scale solar EPC projects
In April this year, SWREL issued a Parent Company Guarantee worth USD 34 million (approximately ₹317 crore) to Nedbank Limited to support the working capital requirements of its step-down subsidiary, Sterling and Wilson Engineering (Pty) Ltd., for its solar poweroperations in South Africa
Earlier, the company secured a turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for a 240 MWac solar PV project in South Africa, valued at approximately USD 147 million (around ₹1,313 crore)
Following the award of the South African project, SWREL said it was executing four turnkey solar PV projects for four reputed developers in the country. The company noted that South Africa’s solar market is witnessing robust growth, driven by increasing corporate demand for energy security, declining solar costs, and the need for greater grid stability
The new wins and renewed focus on global operations represent a distinctly different approach from its earlier global footprint, when projects were in more developed markets such as Australia and the Middle East. SWREL is hedging its risk by taking the JV route where needed, or focusing recute.
