A cobra basking at a waterhole was startled by a flock of over 20 marabou storks that surrounded it.

The highly venomous snake attempted to navigate through the storks in search of safety.

This unusual encounter was captured in the Chobe National Park and shared by Joachim Wendenburg on Latest Sightings.

After observing the storks intently focused on the ground, Joachim and his companion approached and discovered the snake in the shallow water, leading to a fascinating moment of wildlife interaction.

As it raised its head from the water, Joachim was able to identify the cobra, although he couldn’t tell the exact species.

Snakes are adept swimmers and often hunt amphibians in water, making this shallow spot ideal for both storks and snakes due to the abundance of frogs.

Initially, the marabou storks seemed unfazed by the cobra, while the snake appeared agitated. When threatened, cobras spread their hoods using specialized muscles and modified ribs. Although some cobra species are aggressive, this one was in a precarious situation, lunging at the storks in a defensive display.

Alarmed by the snake’s aggressive behaviour, the storks decided to spread their wings. Marabou storks possess powerful bills that can inflict significant harm on the snake.
