The award-winning actor, producer and director has secured the Best Narrative Feature award at the TAFF International Film Festival in Dallas, United States, for his acclaimed film, A Trip to Kigali, delivering another major milestone for Nollywood on the global stage.Shot in Lagos, Nigeria, and Kigali, Rwanda, the film has attracted international praise for its compelling storytelling and powerful cross-cultural message.Speaking after receiving the award, Iheonunekwu revealed that the story was inspired by a real-life experience during his first visit to Rwanda, where he encountered deep-seated stereotypes about young Igbo men shaped by portrayals in some Nollywood films.Rather than ignore the experience, he transformed it into a thought-provoking film that challenges prejudice, encourages dialogue and promotes greater cultural understanding.A Trip to Kigali emerged as one of the festival’s standout productions, also winning the Best Actress 2026 award. Iheonunekwu served as an actor, co-director and producer on the project, which was jointly produced by MOBTV Studios and Onic Entertainment.The production also benefited from the support of Nigerian-American entertainment executive Mr Joe Ugonna, whose commitment to promoting African talent and authentic storytelling has helped position Nigerian films before international audiences.A native of Abia state, Iheonunekwu has steadily earned recognition for producing films that celebrate African history, culture and identity.His documentary, Journey to Igbo Civilisation, won Best Documentary at the Abuja International Film Festival in 2022 and VILLAFEST in 2023, cementing his reputation as one of Africa’s emerging cinematic voices.His latest triumph not only reinforces Nollywood’s growing influence on the world stage but also underscores the power of African cinema to challenge misconceptions, foster cultural understanding and tell authentic stories that resonate across borders.
