At the Moulay-Rachid Stadium in Casablanca this Monday, South Africa, one of the favorites of the competition, faced Tanzania. While many observers favored the Banyana Banyana, they were left disappointed. The Tanzanian players were stronger and more clinical on the field. They won by a score of two goals to one. A victory snatched in the final minutes of the match.
Tanzania started off the match well by opening the scoring in the 37th minute courtesy of Diana Msewa. South Africa got back into the match before halftime (45+2′) thanks to Bambanani Mbane. But the Twiga Stars were able to claim all three points after Hasnath Ubamba scored (87th minute).
Côte d’Ivoire crushes Burkina Faso
Favorites going into the match, Côte d’Ivoire lived up to expectations. The Eléphantes won the West African derby against the Etalons Dames by a score of four goals to one. Bernadette Amani and her teammates put on a show at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca. They dominated the match both in play and on the scoreboard.
Côte d’Ivoire scored as early as the 6th minute. From the penalty spot, Elloh Rebecca opened the scoring. In the 14th and 22nd minutes, Ines Konan scored twice, allowing the Ivorians to go into halftime with a 3-0 lead. Ouedraogo Safi, in the 56th minute, with a beautiful free kick, made it 4-0.
Early in the second half, in the 52nd minute, Burkina Faso was reduced to 10 players. The Burkinabe goalkeeper Faoziatou Ouedraogo was shown a red card after a foul on an Ivorian attacker right on the edge of the penalty area. Down to 10, the Etalons Dames, already outplayed, were powerless in the second half despite scoring a consolation goal.
