Tanzania, Zanzibar, Serengeti and Mount Kilimanjaro Lead Africa’s Tourism Boom as Record Revenue in Billions and High-Value Travellers Redefine Safari Travel, but Is Tanzania Now the Continent’s Gold Standard?

Tanzania has reached a historic milestone in African tourism, generating a record US$4.41 billion (approximately TZS 11.598 trillion) in tourism revenue during 2025. According to the International Visitors’ Exit Survey (IVES) 2025, the country welcomed 2,294,495 international visitors, but the headline story extends beyond arrival numbers. Tanzania is earning significantly more from every visitor, reflecting a deliberate shift towards attracting higher-spending travellers through premium safari experiences, luxury beach holidays and specialised tourism products.

The latest figures reinforce Tanzania’s growing influence as one of Africa’s leading tourism destinations, combining world-famous wildlife reserves, pristine Indian Ocean beaches and adventure experiences that continue attracting visitors from across the globe.

Tourism Revenue Grows Faster Than Visitor Numbers

The most remarkable aspect of Tanzania’s latest tourism performance is the relationship between arrivals and spending.

International arrivals increased by 7.1%, rising from 2,141,895 visitors in 2024 to 2,294,495 in 2025.

However, tourism earnings grew even faster, climbing 13% from US$3.90 billion in 2024 to US$4.41 billion in 2025.

This indicates that visitors are spending more during their stay, helping the country generate greater economic value without relying solely on increasing visitor numbers.

For destinations across Africa, Tanzania’s approach highlights the growing importance of attracting higher-value tourism alongside sustainable visitor growth.

Safari Holidays Continue Driving the Industry

Leisure tourism remains Tanzania’s strongest tourism segment.

Holiday travellers generated US$4.23 billion, representing 95.9% of total tourism receipts, confirming that wildlife safaris, beach holidays and adventure tourism continue driving international demand.

Organised package holidays also remain highly influential, contributing 75.2% of total tourism earnings.

These packages often combine visits to Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Mount Kilimanjaro and the beaches of Zanzibar, allowing travellers to experience several of Tanzania’s signature attractions within a single itinerary.

    Higher Spending Reflects Premium Experiences

Could quality now matter more than quantity?

    The survey suggests exactly that.

On mainland Tanzania, average daily visitor expenditure increased 19%, rising from US$243 to US$289 per day.

In Zanzibar, average spending grew 9.2%, increasing from US$251 to US$274 per visitor per night.

These figures underline growing demand for luxury lodges, boutique safari camps, premium beach resorts and personalised travel experiences that encourage visitors to spend more throughout their journey.

    Tanzania Moves Beyond Pre-Pandemic Recovery

The country has now surpassed pre-pandemic tourism performance by a considerable margin.

International arrivals have exceeded 150% of 2019 levels, supported by stronger international demand, expanded airline connectivity and continued destination marketing.

Improved access through Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro International Airport near Arusha, and Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar has helped strengthen Tanzania’s position within global travel markets.

These gateways continue connecting visitors with safari circuits, mountain expeditions and Indian Ocean resorts.

    International Markets Continue Expanding

    • France – 7.0%
    • Kenya – 6.4%
    • United Kingdom – 6.0%

For the tourism sector, a broader visitor mix helps reduce dependence on individual markets while supporting long-term resilience.

Premium Tourism Products Generate Strong Returns

The survey highlights the value of specialised tourism experiences.

Chinese visitors recorded the highest average daily spending at US$492, followed by visitors from Zimbabwe (US$346) and the United States (US$345).

Among tourism activities, hunting tourism generated the highest average expenditure at US$711 per person per night, followed by cultural tourism (US$537) and wildlife safaris (US$452).

These figures demonstrate the strong commercial contribution of niche tourism experiences alongside traditional safari holidays.

Easy Access to Tanzania’s Leading Attractions

International visitors typically begin their journey in Dar es Salaam, where Julius Nyerere International Airport is located approximately 12 kilometres from the city centre.

Safari travellers often continue to Arusha, around 50 kilometres from Kilimanjaro International Airport, before exploring Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Visitors heading to Zanzibar arrive through Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, situated approximately 8 kilometres from Stone Town, providing convenient access to luxury beach resorts, historic sites and spice plantations.

Hotels range from luxury safari lodges and beachfront resorts to boutique accommodation, while supermarkets, restaurants and tourism services remain readily available across the country’s principal destinations.
