Spain lifted their second World Cup title on Sunday night at New York/New Jersey Stadium after beating Argentina 1-0 in extra time. They finished the tournament unbeaten and conceded just once, a record that will dominate the headlines for years to come.
But speak to anyone who followed the past five weeks closely, and the trophy feels almost like a footnote to a much bigger story.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup was the tournament in which football visibly changed hands.
Ten African nations arrived on the world stage. A team from an island nation of just half a million people pushed Argentina to the limit. Three of football’s greatest icons played their final World Cup matches within days of each other. And a 19-year-old emerged as the player against whom everyone else was measured.

The Atlas Lions then brilliantly dismantled Canada 3-0 before bowing out to France in a 2-0 quarter-final defeat. They matched the stage reached during their historic 2022 run, keeping African football firmly among the world’s elite.
Morocco’s journey confirmed what their supporters had argued since Qatar: they are no longer an underdog story. They are simply one of the world’s best teams.
Cape Verde’s unforgettable fairytale
If Morocco demonstrated Africa’s growing strength, Cape Verde showed football’s ability to create miracles.
A nation of roughly half a million people making its first-ever World Cup appearance arrived in a difficult group featuring Spain and Uruguay—and left unbeaten.
The Blue Sharks recorded three draws, including a remarkable 0-0 result against eventual champions Spain in their opening match.
Their biggest star was goalkeeper Vozinha, a 40-year-old veteran playing club football in Portugal’s second tier. His performances against Spain turned him into one of the tournament’s most unlikely heroes.
Their dream nearly reached another level in the round of 32 when they faced Argentina. Cape Verde matched the defending champions shot for shot, scored twice and pushed the match into extra time before eventually falling 3-2.
It was the greatest World Cup performance ever produced by a nation of their size, transforming Cape Verde from a holiday destination into a football story the world wanted to celebrate.
The 2026 tournament also marked the end of an era.
Three players who shaped the modern game—Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Lionel Messi—all reached the end of their World Cup journeys within the same fortnight.
At 41, Ronaldo made history by appearing at a record sixth World Cup. Around Portugal’s round-of-16 match, he confirmed that the tournament would be his final appearance on football’s biggest stage.
Portugal lost 1-0 to Spain after a stoppage-time winner from substitute Mikel Merino. Ronaldo left the pitch in tears, applauding supporters at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
He has not confirmed his international retirement, but the image of him embracing 19-year-old Lamine Yamal after the final whistle felt like a symbolic passing of the torch.
Neymar’s Brazil journey also came to an end. After 16 years with the national team, he bowed out following Brazil’s round-of-16 defeat to Norway at the same stadium where he made his senior debut in 2010.
He scored a late penalty in his final appearance and later admitted that he had given everything for Brazil.
Messi went the furthest of the three, leading Argentina to the final before Spain ended their hopes in extra time.
