The UNESCO World Heritage Committee is considering adding Chersonesus Taurica in occupied Crimea to the list of sites in danger.
The landmark is threatened by illegal excavations and construction.

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee is considering adding a number of cultural and natural sites to the List of World Heritage in Danger. Among them is the archaeological site of Chersonesus Taurica in Russian-occupied Crimea. This was citing AFP, writes UNN

    Details

During a meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan (South Korea), about 30 new nominations are being considered. Three sites are proposed for simultaneous inclusion in both the World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger.

Among them are the archaeological complex of Sebastia in the occupied West Bank, five medieval castles in southern Lebanon, and the Boma-Badingil savanna in South Sudan.

Olena Zelenska will meet with the UNESCO Director-General regarding the protection of Ukraine’s cultural heritage13.07.26, 18:54

According to AFP, the list of sites in danger may also include the ancient city of Tyre in Lebanon and Chersonesus Taurica in occupied Crimea. UNESCO notes that the Crimean site is threatened by illegal archaeological excavations, intensive construction, and destruction of cultural heritage.

Lake Baikal is also under threat

UNESCO has also expressed concern about the state of Lake Baikal. The organization points out that the world’s largest freshwater lake is suffering from pollution, uncontrolled tourism, deforestation, and other environmental problems, and the measures taken by Russia to protect it are insufficient.

Among the new candidates for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List, the beaches of the Allied landings in Normandy, historic theaters in the Brazilian Amazon, and the Tunisian city of Sidi Bou Said are also being considered.

Greece has submitted Mount Olympus for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List18.07.26, 18:38
