    Sunday Recap

    Stephen Eustáquio, new Canadian legend

The LAFC midfielder scored a game-winning goal in second-half stoppage time, sending Canada to the Round of 16 with a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa

It’s the first berth in the men’s Round of 16 in Canada’s World Cup history. Suffice to say, their fans were thrilled with the result, however tight it was

Canada finished the game with far less possession (42 percent) but a far superior xG (1.32-0.13), largely controlling the game and creating the best chances. They out-shot South Africa 12-6 (7-1 on goal) and had four corners to just one for their African counterparts

Canada’s reward is a pretty rough Round of 16 draw against either the Netherlands or Morocco, two excellent teams. It’s hard to imagine the Canadians reaching the quarters

But the job is done. History was made. Canada will leave this year’s World Cup as an undeniable success story
