Travelling can be stressful for both mind and body. In your quest to enjoy memorable experiences, various aspects of your life can be unsettled, including your gut health.

Air travel, a different diet, a changed routine and a new environment can all get in the way of a happy and healthy gut.

Of course, this can potentially affect the overall enjoyment of a travel experience. However, a grumpy gut can be avoided through a number of intentional choices.

Here are a few ways in which you can keep your gut healthy while travelling:

    Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of water while vacationing is important. Adequate hydration helps to support overall gut health, while also maintaining optimal digestive function.

By drinking enough water, you ensure that your digestive system runs smoothly and constipation is prevented. Find out whether the tap water at your chosen destination is safe to drink. If it is not, drink bottled water to remain hydrated.

    Avoid overeating

Trying out new restaurants and enjoying good food forms part of creating a memorable holiday. However, it is important to resist the urge to overeat.

Watch your portion sizes and avoid high-fat and high-sugar foods, as they can disrupt gut balance and lead to digestive discomfort.

    Be intentional about fiber intake

To keep your bowel movements regular, try your best to eat as much fiber as you normally would at home.

Minimize the intake of processed foods, and stick to vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains. This will also help you to avoid bloating, pain and discomfort.

    Incorporate physical activity

Staying active is important and helpful. Although sticking to an exercise regime when on holiday can be quite challenging, it is important to try your best to prioritize daily movement.

Be intentional about taking walks as this can help to get the digestive system moving. If the hotel at which you are staying has gym facilities, make use of those as well.
