Crime Intelligence boss, Dumisani Khumalo, has revealed WhatsApp messages exchanged between controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and alleged information peddler Brown Mogotsi.

Testifying before the Madlanga Commission, Khumalo detailed how Mogotsi promised to help Matlala save his R360 million SAPS contract but instead pocketed over R100,000 from him across several months.

The contract was eventually scrapped in May after Police Minister Senzo Mchunu ordered a probe into the deal.

The chats disclosed during Khumalo’s testimony implicated several top officials. Among those named were Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, Crime Intelligence spy boss Major-General Feroz Khan, and Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya.

Khumalo told the commission: “Mr Matlala seemed to have a special relationship with General Khan in reference to the chats that we have seen between Mr Matlala and Brown Mogotsi.”

While Mogotsi was allegedly extorting Matlala by promising access to senior figures within SAPS, Khumalo maintained that Matlala had his own powerful connections within the police service.

Insiders within SAPS claim the revelations are part of a wider tug-of-war between Khumalo and Khan over control of Crime Intelligence.

Khumalo, who currently heads the division, has seen his leadership questioned following his arrest by the Independent Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) on fraud and corruption charges in June.
