Ghana midfielder Kwasi Sibo has revealed that his biggest ambition with the Black Stars is to help the country end its long wait for silverware, saying winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy would be the proudest moment of his career.
The 28-year-old, who impressed during his maiden FIFA World Cup appearance at the 2026 tournament, has shifted his focus to the 2027 AFCON as Ghana seeks to reclaim its place among Africa’s football giants.
Following a series of promising displays at the World Cup, where Ghana reached the Round of 32 under head coach Carlos Queiroz, Sibo believes the national team has the quality, experience and leadership needed to compete for continental honours.
The Real Oviedo midfielder, who played a key role throughout the tournament, said winning a major trophy for Ghana remains the dream that drives him.
“There’s always one thing that I want to feel in my heart. I want the nation to also feel it in their heart. It’s to win a cup for the nation,” Sibo said.
“I think it’s been ages since Ghana won a cup. It’s been ages, and now AFCON is coming. That’s a dream, and I want that dream to manifest,” he added.
Ghana last won the Africa Cup of Nations in Libya in 1982 and has endured more than four decades without continental success despite making several appearances in the finals and semi-finals during that period.
Sibo believes the confidence and lessons gained from the World Cup campaign can provide the foundation for a strong AFCON challenge, with the squad showing improved resilience and organisation under Queiroz.
The Black Stars will begin their qualification campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations in September after being drawn in Group C alongside Côte d’Ivoire, Somalia and The Gambia.
With qualification ahead, Sibo remains hopeful that Ghana can take another step towards ending one of the longest trophy droughts in the country’s football history.
