Forty-eight entered. Sixteen remain. The 2026 World Cup opened its knockout stage in style, and made the beautiful game live up to its billing. While many issues persist beyond the pitch, the sport itself has been must-see stuff

Brazil, Canada, England and Portugal each advanced with last-gasp heroics. Morocco and Paraguay pulled off upsets with especially bonkers penalty shootouts. Egypt won in penalties as well to join Mexico and Norway in newfound revelry

And Argentina … what on earth was that match against Cape Verde?! From wall to wall, the round of 32 became a long, theatrical rush

The tournament is flush with a new set of interesting pairs. Spain and Portugal renew their historic rivalry, with Lamine Yamal and Cristiano Ronaldo in contrasting lights. The resilient Paraguayans take on red-hot Kylian Mbappé and juggernaut France. Erling Haaland leads the “Viking Row” against decorated Brazil

Harry Kane’s Three Lions head into Estadio Azteca, where the hosts are at a fever pitch. And the USMNT takes on Belgium without Folarin Balogun, whose red card is still drawing debate around the world

This round of 16 also puts Fox’s main studio team on the road. “Big Zlatan Kickoff” is coming, so prepare accordingly. Here’s the updated schedule for the next eight knockout matchups. Winners book a spot in the quarterfinals, which take place July 9-11
